Thoughts

Dearest Guv, Thank you so much for your kindness, generosity, and for allowing us to share, and be part of, so many Darlow events over the years. The Gill family have felt truly privileged. Trips to Teignmouth, Christmas Eve parties, swims in the pool, boat rides down the river, sailing holidays on Genda and popping into Kalewa for a cuppa, to name but a few. Not to mention your amazing receptionist skills when covering the TRC phones!! I will miss your lovely booming voice saying “ Hello Shaz!” and hearing your heated phone calls in the background when trying to resolve IT issues! We will miss you as that constant kind and generous person in our lives. We are so lucky to have known you ❤️ Sharon, Ian, Elodie and Charlie ( The Gills) xxxx

We both went to Warsash School of Navigation and to sea followed by shipbroking and I also worked with Philip fixing his product tankers. Will miss our group lunches and the Baltic 20 dinner and Teignmouth social life Donald and Jean

Normally on this day each year, I would be sending Guv an email with Birthday wishes so it seems the perfect day to record my reflections on a wonderful 30+ year international friendship (I am an Aussie for those who haven't met me). I was first introduced to Philip and Gill, together with Doug and Nigel, at a dinner in London on my very first trip to old Blighty and we all got on famously, resulting in being invited to stay at Kalewa a couple of nights later where we also met Jenny and Mark and many others as well. We had to wait another year before having the pleasure of meeting Peter. That was my first experience of both British hospitality and the legendary Kalewa parties and I was extremely impressed on both counts so much so that we returned a year later and the year after that etc, etc! I was disappointed not to have been able to attend one of the famous Christmas Eve parties. The Darlows also came to Australia each February so we had quite a number of trips in Oz with them. Wineries were a favourite for Guv! We also had many trips to Europe including a boat trip in France, working all those locks which was such a novelty to me. I was to go sailing on "Genda" but, alas, it had too many bullet holes at that time! Also many visits to Teignmouth, which I love, and it was there I first tasted Guv's world beating bacon sarnies, went off for cockles and mussels in his leaky boat, was dispatched to spend a week enjoying the view from Teignmouth hospital courtesy of the British taxpayer, and had many, many happy times at the Ship Inn! Philip and Mutti also welcomed me to both Kalewa and Teignmouth. Mutti, I sampled the delicious results of your cooking on a number of occasions. I send my condolences to you & was really pleased to have been able to see you both again late 2019/early 2020 just before this dreaded covid took off. I know Guv will be missed by so many as he had the ability to get on well with all age groups. I am so lucky to have had such a great friend and will cherish all the wonderful times we had on both sides of the Equator. Doug, Nigel, Jenny & Peter - my condolences to you and your families and as I am half a generation between you and your parents, you are stuck with my friendship for a while yet! Cathy xx
